Hunger Walk 2016Hunger Walk 2016

The Ministry to the Larger Community brings First Congregational’s compassion and action to our neighbors near and far; funds local, national, and international charities; and coordinates member participation in local charitable initiatives.

The Ministry:

  • Hosts the Walter E. Ashley Memorial Lecture Series, which brings leading progressive theologians to Hendersonville
  • Connects with local print and broadcast media to invite community participation in church programs and to share meaningful milestones
  • Maintains the church website to ensure that current, relevant information is available to the broadest possible audience
  • Researches charitable organizations and donates 10 percent of the church’s annual income to those most consistent with Jesus-centered principles through the Missions and Service team
  • Supports member participation in such local initiatives as the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, the Hunger Walk, the Hunger Coalition, and Feed the Kids
  • Identifies and acts on social justice concerns including the environment, gun control, homelessness, immigration/inclusivity, and mental health

Ministry members benefit from the satisfaction that comes from sharing their time and talent with marginalized populations, from fellowship with like-minded members across the congregation, and from personal growth through teamwork.
